Media Project #5

Anda's Comic Version Comparison

The comic book version of Anda’s game was better in my opinion then the story. The story line in both versions was the same although the comic book version did a little bit better job of explaining some of the things that I thought were unclear in the story version. The pictures in the comic book version helped too because I was able to see exactly what was going on and not have to imagine the scenes while I was reading. The pictures in the comic showed me exactly what the characters were suppose to be represented as and the way they looked in the comic was completely different from how I thought they would look.

In the comic version the whole situation with the factories, the gold, and the missions for the money was better explained so I think that, that made me enjoy the story more this time than I did when I read the story version. When I read the story version I was completely confused so it took me a while to read it because I had to keep re-reading the pages. Also the characters were portrayed in a complete different way then I imagined them to be. I thought of them as being spandex wearing super hero people but they were portrayed more as a Japanese samari fighter.

I really enjoyed reading the comic book version of Anda’s game because I enjoyed the story line and I also was able to better understand what the whole game was about and how everyone interpreted the game.

Review of "Anda's Game"

When I first starting reading Anda’s I was so lost; all the talk about “the game” was confusing. But as I continued to read I realized that “the game” was an online game that Anda played with other people all over the world. Anda seemed to really enjoy the game and how good she was at it. The game in which Anda plays in, almost seems as though it becomes real life for a bit there in the story because it has taken over Anda’s life so much. This story shows how video games can change people for worse and even for the better. It also helps explain why some kids turn to video games in the first place.

In the real world Anda wasn’t really good at anything and she didn’t really have any friends which was completely the opposite in the game. In the game Anda “kicked arse” and she had many friends; she even mentions that the game is where her friends are at. Because she lives her life, per say, through the game she stops taking care of herself in the real world. She eats lots of candy and gets little exercise causing her to get diabetes, which shows that the game had changed her for the worst. Then when she finds out about the girls in the sweat shops in Mexico she feels as if she needs to do something. When Lucy and Anda form together to help Raymond get the girls of the factories to walk out, this shows how the game has changed her for the better.
I feel as if this story, although it is fiction, really conveys what is truly going on in today’s world. The story shows us how easy it is to get sucked into the fantasy world to forget our problems in the real world. It also shows how hard it is at first to turn a life around but that it can be done with hard work and determination. Whether in video games or online chat rooms many people find a way out of the real world that they do not feel comfortable or happy in.

Group#2
-I enjoyed seeing all of the different types of students that you guys came up with.
-I think that it would have been cool if you would have maybe interviewed people and put random clips of those interviews in the presentation.

Group#3
-I think that the approach was a good idea; sharing what makes Purdue special to you.
-Maybe make it a little more entertaining and maybe add more details about Purdue that could protain to everyone not just people interested in your majors.

Review of Jenn Heldt's Blog

Jenn Heldt’s post about her review of an amateur blog was one of my favorite posts of hers. She choose to do her review on a blog site that I feel really would attract college students because of the humorous rewrites of previous professional articles. She did a fine job of drawing me in with details about what is typically posted on the site. I like the way she explained how the site works with all the links and what everything means. These details would help an interested reader be able to easily navigate the new site. Putting the fact in the review about how popular the site is, is also a helpful attention getter because a reader of her review might notice that and want to check the site out just because they feel like they might be more in the know if they did.

In future essays though, she might want to stay away from writing in conclusion in the first sentence of the actual conclusion. If she wraps up her ideas well enough a reader will be able to understand that what they are reading is the conclusion without the “in conclusion” to hint them towards that assumption. Another thing she might want to think about doing is making sure she puts a link up of the site she is doing a review about. Her review really made me want to check out the site but there was no link on her page to direct me to the site. Doing this could also draw in more readers.

After reading Jenn’s review of Gawker I was pretty much impressed. Her use of details and descriptions really persuaded me to want to view the site to check it out for myself because I like reading things of that nature. In future papers I would definitely keep up the good use of detail because with that a reader will never get lost or confused so as long as you keep it interested you won’t lose the reader.

What I am Doing At Purdue

Okay so when I came to college, I thought that I had everything figured out. I had participated in an internship program my senior year of high school. When I applied I originally wanted a position in a Social Service agency but couldn’t work it around my schedule so I settled for a physical therapy office. I really enjoyed that position and so I took the event that happened as a sign that I was not suppose to work as a social worked but as a physical therapist. Throwing away everything that I previously thought I was going to do with my life, I came to Purdue as a Movement and Sports Science major. My first semester I was enrolled in Human Anatomy and Physiology which was a class that kicked my ass. No matter how much studying I did I could not comprehend what was going on. So I thought back to my previous desired profession and looked at the reasons I had for wanting to do that and compared them to the reasons I had for wanted to be a physical therapist and ended up realizing that I had more reasons for wanting to become a social worker than I had for wanting to become a physical therapist. With that and the fact that I was failing the first of many science classes I would have to take I changed my major to Youth, Adult, and Family Services.

I don’t know why I had ever doubted that, that was what I was supposed to do. With this degree I want to become a social worker who works with mentally and physically disabled people. I have a cousin who is mentally disabled and he is the one person on that side of the family that I connect with. He can not talk to me but he has ways of showing me he understands and he connects with me as well. Also when I was in elementary school I volunteered to help the special needs class with gym class. Those kids in that class touched my heart like no one had ever touched my heart before and to this day I have never had anyone touch it like they did. Working with mentally disabled kids and adults would be so rewarding for me and no matter what I will get paid for the job it will be worth it just to be working in a career that I find totally rewarded and that I enjoy doing.

"Life With Down syndrome" Review

It seems that many people believe that if a family has a Down syndrome child then that family has a hard time leading a normal family life. Well I found a site that can prove all those preconceived thoughts wrong. In fact, it may even show that a family with a Down syndrome child may even be more special then one without a Down syndrome child. The author of the blog describes himself like any other man. He starts off saying that he lives in Pennsylvania, has four children and a lovely wife, but the catch is that one of those children, three year old Amanda, happens to have Down syndrome. This father, who owns his own business in advertising, has started a blog in which he pretty much just writes about his family and the things they do and the important things that happen in their lives. The blog is entitled “Down Syndrome Life” and just describes his family life with a Down syndrome child. This father is very credible in this subject because of the fact that he and his family have to live everyday with a Down syndrome child and experience all the good and bad moments that go along with that. The blog is very well organized and is made to look very nice and it does a wonderful good job of using pathos to appeal to ones emotions through his entries, the pictures of his children, and the video he has posted on the site.
The site itself has a black background with a light color used for the writing, making it very easy to read, and all of the links and information are very well organized and easy to find. The father has put pictures of all of his children, not just the child with the Down syndrome, which shows that he has the same amount of love for all of his children. He has also posted a video that stays at the bottom of the blog no matter what page you are on. This video is about a young man who has Down syndrome. He works at a grocery store and when told by a corporate manager that all of the employees needed to do a little extra to show appreciation to the customers, he went above and beyond the expected. This young man went home and started to find quotes that inspired him and every day with the help from his father he would print many copies of one of the quotes and put them in the bags once he was finished bagging the groceries. Soon every customer wanted to get their groceries bagged by this young man no matter how long they had to wait in line, just so that could receive his very inspirational quotes of the day. This video shows that Down syndrome children and young adults can add extra special assets to relationships.
The blog entries are the most important part of being able to realize what it is really like for a family with a Down syndrome child. Reading them makes you see their life in a whole different way. In a few of the entries he does mention how sometimes it can be difficult with a young child who has Down syndrome because that child does develop much slower than non-affected children, but for the most part his entries show that his life is not much different from any other family’s life. In fact some of them may actually show that the little girl of his who has Down syndrome adds a little something special to his life that is not present in other families.
This site appeals greatly to one’s emotions showing that Down syndrome children are just as special as God’s other gifts to earth. Down syndrome children are so full of life and love. Every person a Down syndrome child meets will fall in love with him/her if they allow themselves because of all the love a Down syndrome child is dying to give to the world. I have been around many children in my life and I would have to say that the one’s that I fell in love with the most were children with Down syndrome. If you have never been touched by the love of a Down syndrome child then I could see how you might feel that they would be a great burden to a family, but just by looking at this blog you can see the positive impact Amanda has had on her family. The father’s username is BStrong, because if you stay strong then with all the love a Down syndrome child has to give a person will be able to see around the syndrome and allow themselves to be overtaken by that great love.

Essay #2

When I go to write a paper I have all these great ideas in my head that remind me of something a professional writer would write about, but when I go to put these ideas down it doesn’t end up sounding like I had originally pictured it. I just can’t get my ideas to flow together. I think that is the biggest barrier to public discourse that many people including me have. I think we also have trouble with making our pieces of writing sound professional because many of us have also gotten into the habit of typing in slang because of things like AIM and text messages. This is also something that can create a barrier of public discourse for many people. Along with these barriers there is also one more. Blogging, I feel, has hindered some individual’s ability to write formally. When they are creating a blog post they are just writing down what is in their head and not really thinking about how professional it sounds which is fine but it still is a barrier to professional writing. Being a college student in its self can also be somewhat of a barrier.

In college it may be hard to even be close to writing professionally because teachers sometimes put so many restrictions on assignments that make it hard for the student to get out his/her ideas the way they want to. Also in college you are not allowed to just write about whatever you want to unless you are writing just for fun. This can limit the ability to grow to a professional writer because college students get into the habit of these restrictions and then they find it hard to break away from them.

For me, although I enjoy writing essays, especially when it is something I am interested in, I do not see myself continuing writing, at least for other people then myself to see, after I graduate from college. I just don’t feel that I could ever make it to the level that the great American professional writers of these days are at. Informal writing will be just fine for me in the future because all I need to do is get my thoughts and ideas down on paper and not need to show them to anyone to be satisfied. There is a study that shows if people write for twenty minutes a week, and I mean just write, the piece doesn’t have to have any professional construction at all, then the mental and physical health of the individual writer will improve.
